Biography
Lawton began his career as a Nassau County Assistant District Attorney. As a prosecutor, Lawton handled a wide array of cases that included both violent and non-violent criminal offenses. During his time there, he was quickly assigned to a specialized trial unit that focused on prosecuting vehicular crimes such as DWI offenses. Lawton has completed numerous jury and non-jury trials to verdict with successful results.
After leaving the District Attorney’s Office, Lawton joined a prominent law firm on the East End of Long Island where he practiced in all aspects of civil litigation and criminal defense. At this firm, Lawton also served as an Assistant Prosecutor for the Villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor. He frequently appeared on behalf of the Village in the East Hampton and Sag Harbor Justice Courts.
Lawton is a graduate of the Fordham University School of Law. While he was a law student, Lawton was a board member and competitor for the Brendan Moore Trial Advocacy Center, which ranks as a top-5 trial advocacy program in the country. Lawton represented Fordham Law in four national mock trial competitions during his tenure with the program. In his final year of competition, Lawton’s team was a finalist in the Florida State University National Civil Mock Trial Competition. As a law student, Lawton also held an internship with the Litigation Bureau of the New York State Office of the Attorney General and was selected to be part of Fordham Law’s Prosecution Clinic with the Queens County District Attorney’s Office.
Lawton is a lifelong resident of Long Island and currently resides in Southampton with his wife and family. In his free time Lawton enjoys skiing, playing golf, and rooting for the New York Yankees.
